Recent exceptional rainfall in Soliman caused severe flooding, resulting in human losses, livestock deaths, major property damage and serious disruption to transport, mobility and education. Homes and vehicles were submerged, while local waterways overflowed under the pressure of the rainfall.
Before these events, the Association for Environment and Development in Soliman, AEDS, had been monitoring the environmental condition of Oued El Bey. Field observations, supported by testimonies from local fishers, identified several obstructions affecting the natural flow of water towards Sebkhet Soliman and, ultimately, the sea. These disruptions were considered a risk not only for flood management, but also for the ecological balance of the wetland, its plant diversity and the communities living along the coastal area.

Based on this early assessment, AEDS carried out clearance works along approximately two kilometres of Oued El Bey in autumn 2025, before the recent floods occurred. The intervention covered both sides of the road leading to the beach and was implemented following a technical assessment of its potential effects on the Sebkhet Soliman ecosystem. The works were conducted under the supervision of the local authorities and followed a series of coordination and consultation meetings with the relevant regional and local stakeholders.

Supported by the MENAWET regional initiative, the intervention aimed to improve water drainage, restore the natural flow towards the wetland, reduce flood risks and help preserve the ecological functioning of Sebkhet Soliman. The accompanying video presents part of these works and highlights the importance of maintaining rivers and waterways as essential components of wetland ecosystems. These systems contribute to climate regulation, groundwater recharge and the livelihoods of local communities. AEDS remains committed to working with the municipality, local authorities, research institutions and technical partners to develop practical, preventive and sustainable solutions that strengthen Soliman’s resilience to flooding and climate change.
