Tunisia’s environment minister visits Sebkhet Soliman demo site

On 2 February 2026, the Association for Environment and Development in Soliman, AEDS, joined local authorities in welcoming Tunisia’s Minister of Environment, Habib Abid, and the Governor of Nabeul, Hana Chouchani, during a field visit to Oued El Bey and Sebkhet Soliman.

.

The visit followed the flooding that had affected the city of Soliman two weeks earlier. It provided an opportunity to assess conditions on the ground, discuss the environmental impacts of the floods and consider sustainable measures to strengthen the area’s resilience to future risks. During the visit, AEDS highlighted the intervention carried out in October 2025 with support from the MENAWET regional initiative.

.

The operation cleared approximately two kilometres of Oued El Bey and removed obstructions affecting the flow of water towards Sebkhet Soliman. This earlier work helped improve water circulation and contributed to limiting the effects of the floods recorded in January 2026. The visit also supported continued dialogue between civil society and public authorities on practical measures to protect the wetland and strengthen territorial resilience.
