On 10 September 2025, representatives of ASPEN Cap Bon took part in a field visit to assess small water bodies in Jebel El Haouaria, Tunisia, as part of the regional MENAWET initiative for wetland restoration.

The visit built on national and local efforts already undertaken in the area, including the recently completed project to protect the Municipality of El Haouaria from flooding. The assessment was conducted alongside representatives of the Municipality of El Haouaria, the Regional Commission for Agricultural Development in Nabeul through its Water and Soil Conservation Department, the Kelibia–El Haouaria Forestry District and the Agricultural Extension Unit of El Haouaria.

The visit focused on the water body known locally as “Sad Er-Rjel Ech-Chouhada”, which covers more than 2,500 square metres. Participants observed the deterioration of part of the old stone barriers protected by metal mesh, significant sediment accumulation within the basin and the condition of part of the agricultural track providing access to the site. The field visit concluded with an evaluation meeting at the office of the Secretary-General of the Municipality of El Haouaria. Participants documented their findings and began coordinating the practical measures required to restore the ecological value and water management function of the site as a first step.

ASPEN Cap Bon will subsequently present the proposed intervention to potential donors, with the aim of expanding restoration efforts to other undervalued wetlands and water sources in the area, including the Oued Khazroun and Oued El Karaa dams.
