On 3 December 2024, the MENAWET regional coordinator met with the Wetlands Team of the Libyan Ministry of Environment to discuss potential areas of collaboration.

The consultations explored how Libyan institutional and civil society actors could benefit from the MENAWET project, its regional activities and its network of wetland experts across the MENA region. Discussions also considered opportunities for knowledge exchange, technical support and participation in regional cooperation initiatives.

A major focus of the meeting was the identification of Libyan wetlands that could be proposed for designation as Wetlands of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention. MENAWET will support the relevant stakeholders in carrying out the technical and administrative steps required by the Convention and its Secretariat, including site assessment, documentation and the preparation of the necessary nomination files.

The meeting was also featured in a television report broadcast by Libya’s national television channel, helping to raise public awareness of the discussions and of the importance of protecting the country’s wetland ecosystems. The meeting marked an important step towards strengthening Libya’s involvement in the MENAWET regional network and supporting the long-term conservation of its wetlands.
